Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday announced the re-signings of left wing Ryan Barnes and defenseman Dave Van Drunen, respectively.

Barnes, 23, has spent two of his three professional seasons in the American Hockey League, including the 2002-03 campaign as a member of the Griffins. In 73 games with Grand Rapids, he posted a team-high 151 penalty minutes while contributing 11 points (5-6-11) and a plus-12 rating.

Detroit's second choice (55th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Barnes tied a Griffins franchise record for the fastest goal to start a period on Dec. 26, 2002, when he scored 11 seconds into the third frame against Cincinnati.

The 27-year-old Van Drunen, a contributor on each of the Griffins' four consecutive division championship teams, enjoyed the finest of his six professional seasons in 2002-03. He collected 13 points (3-10-13) while appearing in all 80 games, and his plus-31 rating tied him with defensive partner Travis Richards for the second-highest mark in the AHL.

With 200 regular season games played in a Grand Rapids uniform, Van Drunen places fifth on the team's all-time list. He also ranks among the Griffins' career leaders with a plus-66 rating (3rd) and 262 penalty minutes (8th).
