Bandits on the Hunt for Talent

San Angelo Bandits News Release

San Angelo, TX - The San Angelo Bandits, and their head coach Chris Simpson, have hit the road to search out the best football talent in Texas and the Western U.S. in their effort to build a winning organization.

"As far as I am concerned, it's never too early to start securing players for next season," stated Coach Simpson.

"I'm not simply interested in super stars. I want guys that are hungry, want the opportunity presented to them and have the talent, work ethic and character to make it happen. The fun part of this is we are building the Bandits from scratch.

Simpson's first stop was in his hometown of San Antonio, TX where he attended and assisted in a privately run pro football combine. "There was some talent there," Simpson added. Out of the 40 plus that worked out, 15 athletes caught my eye. We are fortunate that some of those will be signing with the Bandits and I will continue to work on the others."

"I am competing with higher up leagues, other leagues at our level and teams within the Lone Star Football League (LSFL) for talent. It's not only about selling the team, myself and the city of San Angelo, it's also about selling the opportunities that may awaiting them with the higher football leagues such as the AFL, CFL and the NFL."

Coach Simpson has built some solid relationship with coaches and player personnel guys in each of those leagues and will be a road warrior this fall, attending some of their combines in addition to other privately run workouts.

"I have been fortunate enough to build relationships with individuals in the higher leagues. You have to earn their trust in regard to talent. I won't push a player just to get him into camp. He has to have proven ability and character. That is what's great about the situation in San Angelo. Players can come in and have film on their performance that will be accessible to coaches and scouts in the higher leagues. Athletes will get great experience and coaching in San Angelo to assist in their efforts to move up. My job is not only to win football games but, also prepare the player for their next step in their football career."

The Bandits will also be searching for talent in San Angelo's backyard. They are slated to conduct their first Open Tryout in either late October or early November. In addition, they are looking at additional tryout dates in January and February.

"My goal is to have the best 35 man training camp roster in the LSFL. That is a bigger challenge than winning games," said Simpson. "Building a championship team doesn't start in training camp. It starts in the preparation and evaluation of prospects during the off season. You have to find the right players then."

"Recruiting is fun. You win some and you lose but, in the end, if you do it right, you'll get the right players. I won't make promises that I can't keep and I won't cheat to get a player to play for the Bandits. I want integrity and character from my players and they should expect the same from me as there coach."
