February 8, 2005 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release

Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares was named National Lacrosse League Player of the Month for January and San Jose Stealth rookie forward Ryan Boyle was named the Rookie of the Month for January. The awards are determined by a vote of the General Managers of the league's ten member clubs.

Tavares earned the Player of the Month award for January after leading the Bandits to a 3-2 record in the first month of the season. The veteran forward scored a league best 34 points in January on 17 goals and 17 assists. The three-time league Most Valuable Player also collected 43 loose balls in five games. Tavares was named the Week #5 Overall and Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a pair of wins over the Philadelphia Wings that weekend. The Bandits forward has now totaled 983 career regular season points and is just 17 points shy of becoming the second ever player in NLL history to score 1,000 career regular season points.

San Jose Stealth rookie forward Ryan Boyle captured the January Rookie of the Month Award for his role in helping the Stealth to a 3-2 record in the first month of action. Boyle led all rookies in total points with 23 by scoring 11 goals and adding 12 assists. Boyle was the only player to win two weekly player awards in January winning the Week #2 and Week #4 Rookie of the Week Awards. The Princeton University grad and third overall selection in the 2004 Entry Draft was also only one of two players to record two game-winning goals in January along with Rochester Knighthawks Forward John Grant Jr. The Stealth forward also collected 26 loose balls in five games played.
