Baltimore Mariners Report Card vs. Fayetteville

BALTIMORE, MD (April, 26th, 2010) - Thanks to a complete team effort and another great game plan from the coaching staff, the Baltimore Mariners defeated the Fayetteville Guard convincingly last Saturday night. The Mariners managed to put up 91 total points, the most in a single game in franchise history, and used Fayetteville to make history once again.

You can't single out one aspect of a game plan or one player in this game, as this was a complete win for this Baltimore Mariners franchise. Rushing, passing, run defense, pass defense, kicking, kickoff returns; everything was picture perfect in Fayetteville.

The Mariners now run their record to an impressive 7-0, the best record in the east and the AIFA. The exams are in; let's see how the Mariners did in their impressive win over the Fayetteville Guard.

OFFENSE: A+

This highest scoring offense in the AIFA continued to score at will, putting up 42 total points last Saturday night. Quarterback E.J. Nemeth spread the ball around very well, which resulted in four more touchdown passes to add to his season totals.

Running back Isaiah Grier continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the backfield, as he rushed for 45 yards and three touchdowns. The wide receivers owned the 1st ranked pass defense in the AIFA, as Scorpio Brown, Damon Harrison, Aaron Yarbough, and Jamaal Stokes each had a touchdown reception each.

The tone was set early, thanks to a long touchdown pass from Nemeth to Yarbough in the very first play of the game. The story with this offense, other than racking up a ton of points, continues to be their efficiency in the red zone and on third down conversions.

Last Saturday, the Mariners offense capitalized on their red zone trips, going five for six, and converted three of four 3rd down attempts.

DEFENSE: A+

Mariners defensive coordinator Steve Gaunt was smiling ear to ear, as he looked on with great pride at his defense, which I have named "The Swashbucklers", and the incredible performance they had against Fayetteville.

The Mariners defense gives up the fewest rushing yards and the fewest points in the AIFA, and that's exactly what they did last Saturday night. Led by leading tackler and sacker on the day Daniel Orlebar, who racked up eight tackles and three sacks, the Mariners allowed a mere nine rushing yards.

The interceptions kept on coming, as both Adam Goloboski and Armar Watson picked off two Nick Gildersleeve passes. Watson returned his first for a touchdown, and Goloboski returned two back-to-back interceptions for touchdowns.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A+

Mariners kicker J.R. Cipra broke his own AIFA record last Saturday night, racking up six unos against the Fayetteville Guard. The all-pro kicker is still the leading scorer in the AIFA, and gives the Mariners a distinct advantage with his accurate kicking and ability to pin offenses back to let the Mariners defense go to work.

The Mariners finally return to the friendly confines of the 1st Mariner Arena, as they will look to put some separation between first and second place in the AIFA Eastern Division.

They play host to the Harrisburg Stampede, a team that took Baltimore down to the wire in Week 1 of the regular season. Despite being taken down to the very end, the Mariners prevailed 55-48 over their 1-83 rivals, thanks to a 4th quarter interception by Jermaine Thaxton. We encourage you all to come out for this great game between two great rivals this Sunday at 4pm in Baltimore.
