Crystal Palace Baltimore News Release
May 28th 2009 - Ludlow MA - Crystal Palace Baltimore is pleased to announce the signing of forward Machel Millwood, pending USL and USSF approval. Millwood is expected to start up front in tomorrow's home, league match with local rivals Real Maryland at UMBC Stadium.
"We're very excited to pick up Machel," remarked Palace Co-Manager and President, Pete Medd. "We've been talking to him for a couple of years and we're happy we've finally got it done. He's reached the point of his career where winning is the most important thing to him, more important than the individual accolades he achieves. Those are the kind of players you want on your team."
Machel Millwood was born in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica on June 28, 1979. His family then moved to Maryland, where he attended Parkdale High School. Millwood attended Towson University and played forward for the Towson Tigers mens soccer team. During his collegiate career, Millwood received recognition for his play, including being named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) First Team All-Conference and All- Tournament teams, and finishing in the top-10 on Towson's soccer statistics in six categories. In 2003, Millwood joined the Syracuse Salty Dogs of the USL A-League (which became USL1), where he scored a total of 30 points in two seasons. Millwood joined USL1's Atlanta Silverbacks in 2005, playing three seasons with them, scoring 13 goals and notching 7 assists in 44 appearances. In between outdoor seasons since 2004, Millwood has played with the Baltimore Blast, winning the league championship with them three times in the last four seasons. He was the Blast's top scorer last season, finishing fifth in the league in points scored, and sixth the previous season. Millwood was selected as the starting forward for last season's All-League 1st Team. He has also played for the Jamaica U-17 National Team. (His first name is pronounced muh-SHELL.)
"I feel good, actually I'm really pleased about the situation," Millwood commented at this morning's team practice. "It's good to play outdoors again and to be playing for the home team. It should be an easy transition. I've met all the guys - I'm happy, they're all happy that I've become part of the team."
A large crowd is expected for tomorrow's local derby, but some tickets are still available online at http://www.crystalpalaceusa.com or by calling 410.933.TEAM(8326). The match kicks off at 7:30pm.
