Tri-City Dust Devils News Release
The Tri-City Dust Devils lost their season opener Friday night 5-4, in front of a crowd of 3,259 at Gesa Stadium, after allowing five runs in the fifth inning against the Everett AquaSox. The Dust Devils (0-1) got off to a good start, scoring three runs in the first inning, but fell short of a game ending rally, adding one run in the ninth. Everett (1-0) meanwhile tallied 13 hits on the way to their slim victory.
Dust Devils starter Christian Bergman (0-1) took the loss going 4 2/3 innings and allowing all five AquaSox runs, four of which earned, on eight hits. He also struck out four while walking one in his Dust Devil debut. Tri-City reliever Nelson Gonzalez relieved Bergman and went 2 1/3 shutout innings while allowing four hits.
Tri-City reliver Craig Bennigson, a returner from the 2010 Dust Devils, also made his 2011 debut. He went two shutout innings, the eighth and ninth, and allowed just one hit while walking none and striking out two.
Getting the start for Everett was right-hander Stephen Landazuri (1-0), who got the win for the AquaSox, going five innings and allowing three runs on four hits.
At the plate for the Dust Devils catcher Ryan Casteel and outfielder Jared Simon led the charge. Casteel, a call-up from the rookie league Casper Ghosts, went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Simon, a returner from the 2010 Dust Devils, went 2-for-4 in his 2011 debut.
Game two of five between the AquaSox and Dust Devils is Saturday night with a post-game fireworks show presented by Back-to-Basics Chiropractic.
