Back to Back Homers by Kane County Secures Win over Bees

Burlington, IA. - It was a high scoring game for the Burlington Bees (12-27,42-66) in their matchup against the Kane County Cougars (20-21,55-55). However, the Cougars managed to take game one thanks to a pair of late homeruns, to take the game 8-6. Jayson McKinley (6-3) earned his sixth win after going five innings, allowing two runs, one earned on five hits, and threw two walks, and four strikeouts. Max Herrmann (2-6) couldn't continue the success from his last start, as he suffered his sixth loss after going just three innings, allowing five runs, four earned on five hits, threw a season high five walks, and four strikeouts.

Bees take lead after the first

Kane County was able to capitalize on early control issues from Herrmann after he walked Jose Caballero and hit Yoel Yanqui with a pitch. Herrmann did manage to get Yan Sanchez to ground into a double play for two big outs. However, with Caballero at third, Harrison Wenson went a ball go by him for a passed ball, allowing Caballero to score and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

The Bees managed to make the Cougars pay in the bottom of the first, after an error allowed Burlington to get the lead. Torii Hunter hit a hard grounder to Luis Lara at third, but Lara misplayed the ball and Hunter managed to reach safely on the error. Leonardo Rivas then got on with a single, and Orlando Martinez tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single to right. Kevin Williams Jr then gave the Bees their third straight hit on a single to center, allowing Rivas to score and tie the game at 2-2, but Martinez also tried scoring and was thrown out at home, and then Kane County got Williams out trying to advance to second, which really cost the Bees out of a possibly big inning.

Kane County goes up big after scoring in three straight innings

Tra Holmes led the second inning off with another walk for Kane County and advanced to second on his second steal of the year, and then got to third after the throw down to second from Wenson went into center field. Lara then drove a single into center for an RBI, tying the game at 2-2.

In the third, Yanqui led the inning off with a single, but ended up being out after Sanchez was called for batter interference on his strikeout. Jancarlos Cintron kept the inning going though after hitting his 12th double, and Eudy Ramos reached after drawing a walk. Holmes then drove in Cintron on a single to right for his first RBI with the Cougars, giving them a 3-2 lead.

Herrmann then gave up another leadoff walk to start the fourth and then got hit in the ankle after Ryan Dobson lined one right back at Herrmann for an infield single. Zack Kelly then replaced Herrmann and gave up a walk to Caballero to load the bases. Yanqui then drove in the Cougars fourth run on a sacrifice fly, and Sanchez drove in another on a double to right, giving Kane County a 5-2 lead.

Caballero adds another in the sixth

Caballero gave the Cougars a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth after pulling a homerun over the wall in left center for a solo shot, giving him his first homerun of the season.

Bees get back in it with three run seventh

After Wenson led the inning off with a fly out, Alexis Olmeda got his second hit of the game on a single to left, and Hunter got on with a single to right, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Rivas then drove in Olmeda on his 14th double of the season, making the score 6-3. Martinez then added a pair of runs on a single center, to make the score 6-5, but Martinez was thrown out at second trying to advance after the throw to home.

Cintron and Ramos put Cougars back up by three

The Bees were still down just one run heading into the ninth, but Kane County quickly took back momentum. Cintron blasted his seventh homerun to center for a solo shot, and Ramos gave Kane County back to back homers after crushing one over the wall in left, giving Kane County an 8-5 lead.

The Bees managed a run in the bottom half after Hunter drove in Olmeda on a single left, but the Bees hit into three outs, and Kane County earned the 8-6 win.

Not a bad debut for Eagle

Matt Eagle made his Bees debut last night and was looking pretty good after throwing two shutout innings, but the two homeruns he allowed in the ninth proved to be costly. Eagle's stats in his debut were two and a third innings, two runs on two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Eagle did struggle while at Orem as well. All though he did pick up three wins, he allowed 17 runs on 36 hits in just 21.2 innings pitched, posting a 7.06 ERA in eleven appearances.

Rivas and Martinez continue hot hitting

Leonardo Rivas and Orlando Martinez must have had a really good fish fry or something while up in Wisconsin, because both players have been seeing the ball well lately. Rivas had another multi hit night, going 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and scored twice. Rivas is now 6-17 in the past four games and has driven in three runs. Martinez had two hits in his 2-5 night at the plate and drove in three of the Bees six runs. Martinez is currently on a seven game hitting streak, where he has hit 11-27, and has driven seven runs in that span.

The Bees also got multi hit nights from Hunter, Olmeda, and Millard. Hunter was 2-4 with an RBI, Olmeda was 3-4 with a double, and Millard was 2-4 with a double.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will look to bounce back as they face Kane County tomorrow afternoon at 2pm for game two. The Bees are expected to go with Oliver Ortega, who is 3-5 with a 3.95 ERA in twelve starts. Ortega will definitely be looking for a win tomorrow, as he hasn't earned a win since June 25th. The Cougars are expected to start Mack Lemieux. Lemieux has a solid 3.78 ERA, but hasn't had much success winning games, as he is just 2-8 on the season.
