Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (20-24-5) became the first Central Hockey League team to hand the Allen Americans (34-10-1) two losses in a row thanks to their 7-6 victory on Tuesday night and previously 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. Zak McClellan helped lead the Bees with two goals and an assist in the victory tonight.

All three goals in the first period were scored on the special teams as the Americans notched a power-play and shorthanded goal while the Bees added a shorthanded goal of their own.

Allen scored the power-play strike at 5:02 as Bruce Graham put a loose puck behind Juliano Pagliero after Pagliero turned away the Nino Musitelli shot that was deflected by Kip Brennan in front.

The Bees tied the game with a shorthanded goal at 16:06 after Aaron Lee and Zak McClellan put on significant pressure down low. Allen struggled to clear the puck and Aaron Lee was able to pick up a loose puck and after making a move towards the net beat Scott Campbell on the backhand.

Allen retook the lead at the end of the first period with a shorthanded goal of their own. Colton Yellow Horn and Erik Adams came in on a two-on-one, Adams passed the puck back to Yellow Horn who beat Pagliero glove side for the goal at 19:59 of the first period.

The Killer Bees came out churning on all cylinders to start the second period scoring two quick goals. The second period fireworks would not be limited to the Bees as the two teams would combine for six goals in the second frame.

Zak McClellan extended his scoring streak to four games with his strike at 1:17. McClellan picked up the puck from the bottom of the circles and drove across the net floating a backhanded shot to the top of the net to tie the game.

Darcy Campbell gave the Bees their first lead of the game at 6:39 of the second with a power-play strike. Campbell brought the puck from the point to the slot and ripped a shot that seemed to be deflected along the way to Campbell who let it through five-hole.

Allen would launch a rally of their own to retake the lead with a power-play goal at 14:46 and a shorthanded strike at 17:57. Bruce Graham scored the power-play goal, his second of the game and David Nimmo was responsible for the shorthanded tally.

It looks as if the Americans would take the 4-3 lead into the locker room but the Killer Bees would strike twice with less than a minute to play in the period sending them into the locker room with a 5-4 lead.

The first goal was scored by Bo Cheesman at 19:20 with a shot over the shoulder of Campbell after receiving a pass from Dominic D'Amour. For Cheesman it is his fourth goal as a member of the Killer Bees.

Just 23 seconds later the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees would strike again as Zak McClellan scored his second goal of the period with a hard working goal in front of the net. Campbell made the first save on a Cheesman dump in but struggled to play it and McClellan hit the loose puck in.

The third period would continue to see the two teams trade goals as the Bees and Americans each scored a pair of goals. The Bees goals were scored by Dan Gendur while on the power-play and Aaron Lewicki after a feed from Tomas Klempa.

As the game was coming to a close the Americans scored an extra attacker goal with 18:49 remaining. The Bees would hunker down for the final 1:11 of the game as Allen continued to pressure however the Bees defense would not waiver as the Bees earned the 7-6 victory.

The Bees will take their two game winning streak into this weekend when they host the Laredo Bucks for a pair of games at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets are available by calling 956-843-PUCK or visiting killerbeehockey.com.
