Staten Island Yankees News Release

The Staten Island Yankees defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 5-4 to put the team over .500 once again. The crowd of 4,022 fans was treated to an impressive come from behind win by the Baby Bombers.

The Renegades struck first, scoring two runs, all off of doubles in the second inning. Angel Fermin doubled, then scored on a double by Ian Paxton. Paxton then scored himself when James Mayer doubled.

Hudson Valley added to their lead in the third inning following the ejection of Manager Matt Quatraro. Quatraro was ejected for arguing an error after the left fielder Fermin dropped the ball while transferring it from his glove to his hand. A wild pitch by Gabe Medina and a double by Paxton helped the Renegades build a 4-0 lead.

The Yankees bullpen was able to hold off the Hudson Valley offense after they took the early lead. Kyle Hollander relieved Medina and pitched a shutout fourth inning, allowing only one walk in his first appearance. Nick Chigges then took over, allowing two hits and striking out six in five innings pitched. His strong effort earned him the win. The loss went to Jesse Darcy who allowed two hits, two runs (one earned), and one walk while striking out two in two innings.

The Bombers finally took off in the fifth inning and were able to cut the Renegades' lead down to one run. Jose Gil, made up for his earlier throwing error as he hit a three-run home run over the left field wall, scoring Justin Snyder and Austin Krum who had reached on a walk and a single respectively.

The Yankees added two more runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, Isaiah Howes walked and came around to tie the game when Matt Morris doubled. The Baby Bombers then took the lead when Fermin dropped a fly ball by Snyder, allowing Morris to score.

Dellin Betances will take the mound on Wednesday, July 4th at Richmond County Bank Ballpark as the Yankees start a series against the rival Brooklyn Cyclones. The game will be a 6:00 p.m. start, as the fans will be treated to Independence Day fireworks after the game.
