Aztex Meet LA Galaxy II on Saturday
August 13, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas (August 13, 2015)- The Austin Aztex (7-11-3) will host LA Galaxy II (11-8-3) on Saturday, August 15th at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Austin.
The match will be the second and final regular season meeting between the two clubs, who played on April 19th in Los Angeles, where the Galaxy II took the win by a score of 2-1 over Austin. Sainey Touray scored the lone goal for the Aztex in the match.
Austin faces an uphill climb to the playoffs after dropping their last two matches. Sitting at 11th place and nine points out of the sixth playoff spot, the Aztex would like to pick up three points to get back into the hunt and look to play spoiler for other teams with playoff aspirations. The Aztex face six contenders in a row to finish off the season, including five matches in a row against teams currently in the top five in the Western Conference. A run back into the postseason picture would be historic, but is not unheard of- Wilmington went undefeated for six straight games just last season to edge into the playoffs.
Austin has played sharp defensively, where they rank 8th in the USL with just 27 goals allowed on the season and 7th with an average of 1.29 goals allowed per game. Goalkeeper Devin Perales ranks 7th in the league with five shutouts. Conversely, Austin is 20th in the league with 22 goals scored in 21 games this season. They will look to forwards Kris Typak and Trevin Caesar, who are tied for the team lead with seven goals each, to give the team momentum going into the final stretch of the season as they try to pull off a playoff run.
Galaxy II comes into the match hoping to break out of a slump after dropping their last three matches, having been outscored 6-1 over that stretch. This game will have major playoff ramifications for Los Dos, as they are two points away from the top seed, but just four away from falling out of the playoffs all together. If they return to mid-season form, they will be a formidable opponent going into the playoffs as they hold the second best goal differential in the Western Conference. LA ranks 6th in the league defensively with 24 goals allowed, and 11th in goals scored with 31.
Ariel Lassiter leads the offense with a team-leading nine goals and 19 points on the season while Raul Mendiola added eight assists to the stat sheet. This game may also serve as the debut of the newest Los Dos loanee in midfielder Bryan Olivera, who joined the club on season-long loan from Fluminense.
Gates for Saturday's matchup open at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Fans can purchase their tickets online at http://austinaztex.com/tickets/.
