Austin, Texas - The Austin Aztex (8-12-3) stood tall and needed a lone goal from Kris Tyrpak to defeat the Orange County Blue by a score of 1-0 Saturday night at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.
A second half goal from Kris Tyrpak would be the difference in the game, with Austin taking the win in a physical matchup.
Both teams came out of the gates with energy, but opened the game with a run of sloppy possessions. The slow start would transition into a scrappy remainder of the period, with a total of 20 fouls called in the half, 10 for each team, and three yellow cards issued to Austin. The first 45 minutes were evenly matched, with neither team able to gain a clear advantage of possession and both defenses able to hold strong. The game went into halftime with a score of 0-0.
Physical play continued into the second half. The Aztex finally netted the game's first goal in the 70th minute. Romain Gall sent a low cross in off a corner kick, resulting in a scrum in front of the net. Kris Tyrpak attempted to poke in a sneaky goal, but the Orange County defense was there to clear the ball. The clearance went right to Guaraci on the left edge of the box, who opted to tap it back in to an open Tyrpak in front of the net to set up the easy goal. The goal makes Tyrpak's eighth of the season, tying him for the team lead with Trevin Caesar. Chippy play continued until the final whistle, as the game ended with a total of six yellow cards and 31 fouls called. At the end, Austin claimed a 1-0 victory.
The win moves Austin to (8-12-3) on the season with 27 points, keeping their playoff hopes alive, although the team will need to make the most of their final five games which include four on the road. Orange County now sits at (11-9-3) with 36 points, right on the playoff bubble with five games left.
The Aztex will continue their season next Saturday when they travel north to face Oklahoma City Energy FC.
