Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas (Saturday, April 4, 2015) - The Austin Aztex (2-1-0) recovered from a midweek loss to secure three points on the road when they defeated the Tulsa Roughnecks (0-2-1) by a score of 2-0 Saturday evening at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Okla.
Austin native Kris Tyrpak scored both goals for the Aztex. The first goal displayed speed for the forward when he beat the goalkeeper one-on-one while the second goal displayed pure power. Defensively, Aztex goalkeeper Devin Perales would come up with eight saves and a shutout against a Roughnecks opponent that fired off 22 shots.
Both teams, coming off of midweek losses, were eager to dictate the tempo of the game. While the Aztex emphasized possession, the Roughnecks started the game with a direct, long passing style. The Aztex were able to utilize their speed to strike first when Andres Cuero threaded a through ball through the Tulsa defense, where Kris Tyrpak raced past the defender for a one-versus-one against goalkeeper Zac Lubin. Tyrpak would juke to the left to free himself of Lubin and then calmly hit the ball into the next for the first score of the game.
Tyrpak would make a statement with his second goal of the game in the 66th minute. The Aztex forced a turnover deep in the Roughnecks' defensive area. Tony Rocha would collect the ball at the top of the penalty area and hit a rolling pass to Tyrak on the left side of the goal. Tyrpak had time to wind up and unleash a left-footed blast that whistled past Lubin for the insurance goal.
While the Aztex tried to put the game away with a third goal, the Roughnecks put every attempt into pulling themselves back into the game with an array of shots. Aztex goalkeeper Devin Perales receives credit for the shutout after coming up with eight saves and not conceding the goal. The Aztex backline, led by Kyle Hoffer, Travis Golden, and Kalen Ryden also came up big, blocking many of Tulsa's shot attempts.
The Aztex will return to House Park for a match versus undefeated Arizona United SC (2-0-0) on Saturday, April 11 at 8 p.m.
