
Avs Rally Past Wild

PALMER, Alaska. - The Wenatchee Wild took an early 2-0 lead Tuesday night, but the Alaska Avalanche rallied for a 3-2 win at the Palmer Ice Arena in Palmer, Alaska. The Wild fell to 13-8 with the loss and remain deadlocked in a first-place tie in the West Division.
D.J. Vandercook (Farmington Hills, Mich.) staked the Wild to a 1-0 lead 74 seconds into the contest when he scored on a wrist shot from the near circle, beating Alaska netminder Landon Peterson 5-hole. Tyler Hope (McKinney, Texas) assisted on what was Vandercook's seventh goal of the season.
Max McHugh (Edgewood, Wash.) scored his first NAHL goal on a sharp-angle shot at the 13:18 mark of the first period to extend Wenatchee's lead to 2-0. Evan Schmidbauer (Surrey, BC) assisted. McHugh, 17, the Wild U18 team's leading scorer (14 points), has been in the Wild lineup the last four games.
The Avs would go on to score three unanswered power-play goals to shock the Wild, 3-2. Zach Smith got Alaska back into the game early in the second period when he capitalized on a man-advantage chance at the 3:45 mark.
Jacob Barber scored two power-play goals for the Avalanche in the third period. His first came during a 2-man advantage at the 3:46 mark. Twenty-six seconds later, Barber recorded another power-play goal, which would count as the game-winner. The Wild appeared to score the equalizer with an extra attacker on the ice with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, but the goal was disallowed.
Wild netminder Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) made 33 saves on 36 shots but saw his record fall to 10-5 with the loss. Peterson made 35 saves on 37 shots.
Alaska capitalized on three of its six power-play chances while Wenatchee went 0-for-6.
The Wild will try to split its series against the Avalanche on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. (PST).
