Coastal Bend Aviators News Release
ROBSTOWN, TX â Coastal Bend scored in double digits for just the second time this season and Carlos Adolfo led the attack with four runs batted in as the Aviators downed the visiting Amarillo Dillas 10-7 Wednesday night in the opener of a four game series at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown.
Due to rain, the start of the contest was delayed nearly an hour and 20 minutes, but once play began Amarillo wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Carlos Figueroa led off the game with a single, stole second, went to third on catcher Trey Salinas' throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Asdrubal Oropeza. The Aviators jumped on Dillas starter Elliott Shaw in the 2nd â Mike Guerrero drilled a one-out double to left field and came home on Marcus Knight's single to center. Knight stole second and went to third when J.R. Cortez reached base on a third strike wild pitch...John Ramistella then singled to left to plate Knight and put the Aviators in front 2-1. That brought up Adolfo, who ripped a double down the right field line to knock in Cortez and Ramistella and give Coastal Bend a 4-1 lead.
The Aviators went up 7-1 with three runs in the 4th inning â Cris Colon's sac fly plating Cortez and Francisco Lebron singling home Cortez and Ramistella â but Amarillo cut the lead to four when Trent Otis cracked a two-out, two-run double off Coastal Bend starter Jose Luis Lopez in the top of the 5th. The Aviators got one run back in their half of the 5th when Guerrero scored from third on a wild pitch, but Coastal Bend's 8-3 lead was short-lived as Amarillo scored three in the 6th â Otis again providing the key blow with a two-run single. It stayed that way until the 7th when Adolfo struck again, lining a two-bagger down the left field line to drive home Cortez and Ramistella to make the score 10-6. The Dillas pushed a run across in the 9th, but Aviators reliever Kevin Seibert put an end to any thought of a late-inning comeback when he struck out Benny Craig to end the game and give Coastal Bend its third win over the Dillas in four tries this season.
Lopez (6-3) struck out seven in five-and-two-thirds innings of work to pick up the win for the Aviators, with Shaw (1-5) losing to Coastal Bend for the second time this season. Adolfo, Guerrero and Knight had two hits apiece to pace the Aviators offensive attack; Otis and Matt Mann each had three hits for Amarillo. With Wednesday's win, Coastal Bend improves to 22-23 on the year, while the Dillas dropped to 12-31 for the season. Game two of the series is set for Thursday with righthander Mike Smith (5-3) on the mound for the Aviators (Smith making his second attempt at winning his Central Baseball League record 66th game), while Amarillo counters with righty Keith Ferguson (0-0).
