Aviators lose 2-1 heartbreaker to Colts

August 14, 2004 - Central Baseball League (Central League) - Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

ROBSTOWN, TX – A potential high-scoring affair turned into a terrific pitchers duel between Coastal Bend’s Jose Luis Lopez and Dave Therneau of San Angelo…the Colts scored a pair of runs in the 1st inning and held off several Aviators scoring threats to squeak out a 2-1 victory in front of 2,488 fans Friday night at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas.

Lopez would end up tossing his third complete game of the season, but in the opening frame he had trouble getting anyone out – Jorge Diaz led off the game with a single to right…base hits by Matt Sanchez and Tony James loaded the bases with nobody out. Bert Aguilar then rolled a single through the middle of the infield to plate Diaz and put San Angelo on the board…Sanchez came home to score the second run of the inning when Lee Laskowski hit into a double play. In the bottom of the 1st, Coastal Bend scored what turned out to be their only run – Marcus Knight singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out double by Mike Guerrero, cutting the Colts lead to 2-1.

The Colts attempted to extend their lead in the 2nd, but on a two-out single to center by Sanchez, Aviators outfielder Eric Battersby threw Joe Gilbert out at the plate to end the inning. Lopez was nearly perfect the rest of the way, allowing just two baserunners over the next seven innings and at one point retired 15 straight San Angelo batters. Coastal Bend had their chances to knot up the score against Therneau but stranded runners in scoring position in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th inning. In the bottom of the 9th, the Aviators put two aboard with one out against Colts closer Quentin Jones…but Cris Colon was forced out when Laskowski, unable to make a diving catch of Trey Salinas’ shallow fly to right field, recovered quickly and threw to second for out number two. With runners at the corners, Jones got J.R. Cortez to ground back to the box to end the game and give San Angelo its second straight win over Coastal Bend.

Therneau (3-4) went eight innings and struck out seven to earn the victory; Jones picking up his fifth save of the season…Lopez (9-5) struck out a season-high nine but was saddled with the hard-luck loss. Sanchez went 2-for-4 to pace the Colts seven hit attack; Battersby had two of the Aviators six hits on the night. With Friday’s loss, Coastal Bend fell to 16-24 in the second half (40-48 overall), and though they remained two games back of Amarillo in the race for the West Division’s second playoff spot (the Dillas were hammered by Edinburg 18-10), the Dillas magic number for clinching the post-season berth was reduced to seven…San Angelo improved to 12-28 in the second half and 35-52 on the year. The Aviators shoot for a series split Saturday – lefthander Matt Rohr (1-1) will be on the mound for Coastal Bend; the Colts will counter with righty Chad Johnson (5-10).
