Aviators doubles up Jackson

June 27, 2004 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

Robson, TX– Lavelle Morgan pitched seven strong innings and was provided plenty of offensive support as Coastal Bend defeated Jackson 6-3 in front of 1,547 fans Sunday night at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas...the Aviators taking the opener of their four-game series with the Senators and kicking off the second half of the Central Baseball League season on a positive note.

Coastal Bend opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning against Jackson starter Rusty Camp – with two outs, Carlos Adolfo drilled a double down the left field line, and came home one pitch later on an Edwin Maldonado single to left. In the 4th the Aviators went up 2-0 when Franscisco Lebron led off the inning with a towering home run over the left field wall. Coastal Bend extended their lead to 4-0 by plating a pair in the 5th – Marcus Knight scored from second base when Camp, trying to nail Lou Ferrell at first, sailed his throw into right field...Ferrell ending up at third on the play. Adolfo then lined a single up the middle to drive home his 27th run of the year.

Morgan scattered five hits and fanned five through the first six innings, but in the 7th Javerro January got Jackson on the board with a solo homer to left. The Aviators tacked on what proved to be big insurance runs in the 8th – with Camp still on the mound, John Ramistella singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by Senators catcher Gerard McCall and scored when Trey Salinas singled past the drawn-in Jackson infield. Mike Guerrero followed with a single to right...both runners moving up on a Knight groundout. Ferrell then slapped a single into right field to plate Salinas to put Coastal Bend up 6-1. Jose Luis Lopez came on in relief for the Aviators in the 9th, but two errors allowed the Senators to score twice and get the tying run to the plate. But Lopez stiffened, getting Selwyn Langaigne to fly out to left to end it and give Coastal Bend their fourth win in the last five games.

Morgan (3-4) got credit for the win, while Camp (5-4) took the loss. The Aviators had 11 hits on the night, with Ferrell going 3-for-4...Adolfo also chipped in with two hits. Steve Newson, in his Jackson debut, had three of the eight Senators hits on the night. Sunday's win improved Coastal Bend's record to 1-0 in the second half (25-24 overall), while Jackson dropped its sixth straight to fall to 0-1 in the second half and 19-29 on the year. Game two is scheduled for Monday at Fairgrounds Field, with righthander Dan Henderson (0-0 with Coastal Bend, 3-1 overall) on the mound for the Aviators...the Senators will counter with righty Kevin Kuklis (0-2).
