Aviators Decimate Dans

August 3, 2019 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Lafayette Aviators News Release

The Lafayette Aviators defeated the Danville Dans by a score of twenty to six, winning their fourth game in their last five tries. The night got started with the game ball being delieved via skydiver, and the game that followed was just as exciting.

The slugfest got started in the top of the first inning, when the Dans struck for three runs including a two-run home run off of Aviators' starting pitcher Caleb Buehrle (Truman State). While Buehrle struggled early, he recovered, only giving up two more earned, while going six innings. Buehrle was provided with a lot of run support as the Aviators scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Braedon Blackford (Illinois State) got the party started with a solo home run, which was then followed up with RBIs from Blake Schmitt (Purdue), and Zach Swartzenberger (Toledo).

The Aviators then struck again in the bottom of the third inning, when Nick Mayerhofer (Illinois-Springfield) broke his six-game hitless streak with a two-RBI single. Mayerhofer was later driven home on a sac-fly by Braedond Blackford. Mayerhofer had a great game, driving in three runs on two hits and two runs. He scored his second run on a home run by Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois), giving the Aviators a tweleve to five lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Aviators continued to add to their lead, scoring at least two runs in five consecutive innings, with offensive production spread throughout the lineup. Seven different Aviaotrs had at least two RBIs, including Braedon Blackford, Mason Sykes (Wabash Valley CC), Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois), Blake Schmitt, Zach Schwartzenberger and the afore mentioned Nick Mayerhofer.

The Aviators play their final road game of the season tomorrow against Champion City, before coming home to play the final game in Loeb Stadium history.
