Paints Beat Miners 14-9, Take over First Place

BECKLEY, W.Va. - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, defeated the West Virginia Miners 14-9 at Linda K Epling Stadium Saturday night. The Paints' win, combined with a Danville loss, puts Chillicothe up by one game in the East Division lead.

Chillicothe (38-19) fell behind early, allowing West Virginia (18-39) to score three unearned runs through the first three innings.

The Paints cut the Miners' lead to 3-2 with a two-run fourth inning. Cole Andrews doubled with one out and scored on a single by Trey Smith. With two outs, Colin Shepherd singled home Smith.

The Miners got those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Clayton Mehlbauer was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second base. Caleb Walls followed with a single and Ross Mulhall hit a double to score Mehlbauer and Walls, making it 5-2 Miners.

Chillicothe loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth on a walk, error and single. After a pitching change, Shepherd singled, driving home Andrews and Smith, cutting the deficit to 5-4. With two outs, Cody Orr hit a two-run triple, giving the Paints their first lead of the game at 6-5.

A walk and a single put Andrews and Smith aboard with one for the Paints in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Justin McIntyre brought Andrews home with a single. After Shepherd walked to load the bases, Parker Murdie unloaded them with a three-run triple. Murdie scored on a single by Orr, giving the Paints an 11-5 lead at the stretch.

The Miners scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but the Paints went back to work in the top of the eighth. Andrews led the inning off with a double and Smith hit a two-run home run. McIntyre later reached on a double and scored on an error, making it 14-7 Chillicothe.

West Virginia scored two more in the bottom of the eighth, but the Paints won 14-9.

Chillicothe starter Jack Raines (7-1) earned the win. He allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits, walking one and striking out five.

Several players had big performances at the plate. Orr was 3-for-6 with his league-leading 12th triple and drove in two. Andrews was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two walks and four runs scored. Smith went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and four runs scored. McIntyre went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Shepherd went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Murdie was 1-for-5 with a three-run triple.

The Paints return home to VA Memorial Stadium Sunday for a pivotal matchup with the Danville Dans, who trail the Paints by one game for first place in the East Division with three games to play. The division winner will host the one-game, winner-take-all divisional playoff game Thursday, August 8. Sunday is Subway Kids Day, all children (12 & under) receive free admission and it's Bark In The Park, sponsored by Petland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Gates open at 5:05 p.m.
