Paints Beat Miners, Clinch Playoff Berth

BECKLEY, W.Va. - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, scored six runs in the top of the seventh to take control in a 10-5 win over the West Virginia Miners at Linda K Epling Stadium Friday night. The win clinches a playoff berth for the Paints, their eighth in 11 years of playing in the Prospect League.

The Paints (37-19) scored first. Cody Orr walked to lead-off the game and then stole second and third. With two outs, Cole Andrews hit a ground ball to shortstop that was mishandled, allowing Orr to score, giving the Paints a 1-0 lead.

West Virginia (18-38) tied the game in the fourth, but the Paints answered in the top of the fifth. Charlie Patrick was hit by a pitch with two outs. Orr followed with an inside-the-park home run, putting the Paints back in front 3-1.

The Miners scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the Paints lead to 3-2.

Chillicothe broke things open in the top of the seventh with a little help from some erratic pitching. Joe Laudont walked to get things started. He went to second on a balk. With one out, Collin Luty walked and Charlie Patrick singled, loading the bases. Orr walked, bringing home Laudont. With the infield in, Chris Eisel hit a ground ball to shortstop, where it was mishandled, allowing Luty to score and all other runners to advance. Patrick scored on a wild pitch and Gavin Homer walked. After a pitching change, Andrews singled to score Orr and Eisel. Laudont, batting for the second time in the inning, singled home Homer, capping a six-run innings and giving the Paints a 9-2 lead.

Jonathan Pasillas hit a two-run home run for West Virginia in the bottom of the seventh, part of a three-run inning for the Miners, cutting the Paints lead to 9-5.

The Paints added one more in the top of the eighth innings. Collin Luty walked and stole second base. He scored on a double by Eisel, making it 10-5, the eventual final score.

With four games remaining in the regular season, Chillicothe will play in the East Division Championship Game August 8 against either Danville or Terre Haute with the location yet to be determined.

The Paints play the Miners in Beckley again Saturday night at 6:35 p.m.
