Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Summerlin, NV - The Albuquerque Isotopes pitching staff suffered a tough outing, surrendering five home runs in a 12-4 loss to the Aviators on Friday night at Las Vegas Ballpark. Albuquerque has dropped three of its last four games following a season-high four-game winning streak.
Las Vegas plated five runs on six hits in the first inning, with all of the tallies coming via the long ball. Former Rockies farmhand Vince Fernandez opened the scoring with a three-run homer, before Christian Lopes connected on a two-run blast to make it 5-0. Lopes is the older brother of Isotopes utility man Tim Lopes, who has been on the Injured List for nearly a month with a broken left hand.
Dermis Garcia connected on a solo homer in the third to give the Aviators a 6-0 lead, then Vegas plated two more in the fourth on RBI singles by Garcia and Lopes.
Albuquerque found the scoreboard in the fifth. Alan Trejo and Coco Montes each singled before Bret Boswell ripped a one-out double to plate Trejo. Then, Wynton Bernard picked up an RBI on a groundout, bringing the Topes within 8-2.
The Aviators flexed their muscles twice more in the seventh inning when Shea Langeliers and Drew Jackson each went deep off Logan Cozart.
Kris Bryant started the eighth with a double for Albuquerque, his first hit in 10 at-bats on this rehab assignment. Three batters later, Bryant came around to score on a two-bagger by Dom Nuñez.
Montes led off the ninth with a triple, his fourth hit of the game, and Bernard drove him in with his second RBI groundout.
Topes Scope: - Albuquerque has by far given up the most first-inning runs of any team in Minor League Baseball. The Isotopes have surrendered 82 runs in the first (10.54 ERA), 23 more than Asheville (Astros High-A), St. Paul (Twins Triple-A) and Stockton (A's Low-A) who have all allowed 59 in the opening frame.
- The Topes surrendered their second-most homers in a game this year behind the seven allowed to Sugar Land on May 10. The five long balls relented were the most in a road contest since Reno clubbed five on June 19, 2021.
- Montes racked up his first four-hit game since June 25, 2021 with Double-A Hartford vs. Richmond. It was the sixth time in his career he has had four or more hits in a ballgame.
- Montes' infield hit in the third was Albuquerque's first single since Boswell in the seventh inning on Wednesday. In between, they registered one double and three home runs for their hits.
- Trejo extended his hit streak to six games.
- Scott Schebler is batting .186 with 37 strikeouts in 102 at-bats on the road in 2022, compared to a .301 average at home.
- Neither starting pitcher issued a walk (Smith in 3 IP; Collin Wiles in 7 IP) for the second time in a Topes game this year (Ashton Goudeau and Evan Miller on 6/9 vs. ELP).
- Albuquerque lost a game with Smith as the starting pitcher for the first time this season (5-1).
- 13 of the 30 runs allowed by Smith with the Isotopes have come in the first inning.
- The Isotopes have dropped eight of their last nine games at Las Vegas Ballpark, and are 5-13 at the stadium since it opened in 2019. Overall, Albuquerque is 7-18 in their last 25 away games against Las Vegas, dating back to a loss to the 51s at Cashman Field on May 13, 2018.
On Deck: Albuquerque and Las Vegas will play the penultimate game of their series tomorrow at 8:05 p.m. Right-handers Brandon Gold and Adrian Martinez are slated to face off on the mound.
