Avengers to Host AFL Playoff Game on Saturday
July 21, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- The first playoff game in the three-year history of the Los Angeles Avengers will be played on Saturday, July 27, at STAPLES Center against the Tampa Bay Storm, one of the most-storied franchises in the Arena Football League. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, the STAPLES Center box office or by calling 1-888-AVENGERS.
After defeating the Buffalo Destroyers, 46-41, on Saturday night before a record crowd of 14,427 at STAPLES Center, the Avengers improved to 8-6 on the season and earned the No. 5 seed in the playoffs. If Los Angeles emerges victorious from its first-round match-up versus Tampa Bay, it will advance to the quarterfinals and face the No. 4-seeded New Jersey Gladiators on Aug. 3, at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J.
Tampa Bay beat the Georgia Force, 67-61, in overtime last night to run its record to 6-8 and got help from four other teams (one of which was the Avengers) to secure the 12th and final berth into the postseason. The Storm, who have won four ArenaBowl world championships (1991, 1993, 1995, 1996), have now qualified for the playoffs in 12 consecutive seasons, which is an AFL record.
Los Angeles and Tampa Bay met earlier this season. The Avengers won that contest, 38-24, on May 17, before 11,961 at STAPLES Center.
