Avengers sign Sean McNamara to contract extension

LOS ANGELES -- On the last day that Arena Football League teams can re-sign their own players before they become unrestricted free agents, the Los Angeles Avengers have agreed to a contract extension with offensive lineman Sean McNamara, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.
McNamara (6-3, 305, Pittsburg State [Kan.]), who signed a two-year deal that will keep him in Los Angeles through the 2009 season, was eligible to become a free agent after today's deadline.
"We feel that Sean is one of the elite offensive linemen in the Arena Football League," said Hodgkiss, who signed a five-year contract extension of his own last month. "He's a guy that has been with us since I've been here and we'd love to see him play out the rest of his career here in Los Angeles. Sean is the leader of our offensive line and we are extremely pleased to re-sign him."
McNamara can play all three offensive line positions, but has spent the bulk of his time at center during his six previous seasons with the Avengers. He has started 45 consecutive regular-season games for Los Angeles, but missed both playoff contests this past season due to a foot injury.
Prior to joining the Avengers in 2002, McNamara played his rookie season with the Houston ThunderBears. In his seven-year AFL career, he has played in a total of 99 regular-season games and has one reception for four yards. While playing along the defensive line (mostly in previous seasons, prior to the "free substitution" rule), McNamara has made 34.5 tackles, batted down four passes, recorded three quarterback sacks, recovered two fumbles and blocked one kick.
McNamara is the third Avenger player to re-sign with Los Angeles prior to the AFL's free agency deadline. Defensive lineman Josh Jeffries and quarterback Sonny Cumbie both inked three-year deals earlier this month.
