Storm Re-sign DL Mark Word

TAMPA BAY - The five-time world champion Tampa Bay Storm have re-signed defensive lineman Mark Word to a two-year contract, Head Coach and General Manager Tim Marcum announced today.
Word, 6-foot-5, 300 pounds, made his AFL debut with the Tampa Bay Storm this past season. He appeared in all 16 games and finished tied for the team lead in fumble recoveries (3), and was third in sacks (2) and pressures (39). Word also finished tied for second among all AFL rookies in fumble recoveries, tied for fourth in tackles for a loss (4) and tied for sixth in sacks.
"Mark had a solid rookie season," said Marcum. "With a year under his belt we expect him to increase his production next season and to make a significant impact on the defensive line."
The lineman signed with the Storm on October, 26, 2006. He began his professional career in 1999 with the Kansas City Chiefs and appeared in five games. In 2000 he played with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League where he started seven games and accumulated 15 tackles and five sacks. He then signed with the St. Louis Rams in 2001 and was assigned to the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe.
After the conclusion of his season in Europe he spent 2001-03 with the Cleveland Browns where he appeared in 32 games highlighted by eight sacks in 2002. After missing the 2004 season due to injury Word spent the next two seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Montreal Alouettes, Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts.
The Tampa Bay Storm look forward to next season as many key players from 2007 will return. AFL Co-Rookie of the year and All-Rookie quarterback Brett Dietz, All-Ironman Lawrence Samuels, record setting fullback Torrance Marshall and touchdown-leading wide receiver Terrill Shaw, among others will be back to take the 2008 AFL season by storm.
