Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- Remy Hamilton, one of the Arena Football League's top placekickers, has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep the free agent with the Los Angeles Avengers through the 2004 season, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.
Hamilton rewrote the Avenger record book last season, playing in his first year with the club. His 16 field goals set both the season and career marks. Hamilton also kicked a single-game record four field goals against the San Jose SaberCats on June 8, 2002. A month later, he blasted a 52-yarder versus the Arizona Rattlers to set a new team mark. Hamilton also finished the season with 15 tackles (13 unassisted), which ranked him at ninth on the team.
"Remy came in last year and really helped contribute to our success," said Hodgkiss, who led the Avengers to an 8-6 record and No. 5 seed in the AFL playoffs last season in his first year with the club. "He is one of the better kickers in the league and we are excited and lucky to have him back. It's so difficult to find a consistent kicker with quality experience in the Arena Football League. With Remy, we have one of the best."
A veteran with 70 AFL games under his belt, Hamilton has made 76 field goals and 356 PATs in his AFL career for a total of 590 points. He currently ranks at No. 6 on the AFL's all-time lists for field goals made and scoring by kickers (third among active players in field goals and fourth in scoring).
Hamilton originally signed a free agent contract with the Avengers on Jan. 25, 2002. He began his AFL career in 1998, spending two seasons with the Grand Rapids Rampage. Hamilton moved on to play for the Carolina Cobras (2000) and Milwaukee Mustangs (2001), before joining the Avengers.
At the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Hamilton was a first-team All-Big Ten selection and one of five finalists for the Lou Groza Award (given to the nation's top collegiate placekicker) as a sophomore in 1994. During that season, he led the team with 101 points, setting a school scoring record for kickers. Hamilton's 25 field goals in 1994 still stands as a Michigan single-season record. He also was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Born in Wildwood, N.J., Hamilton attended Spanish River High School (Boca Raton, Fla.), where he played quarterback and defensive back, in addition to handling the placekicking and punting duties. He was named the Sun-Sentinel "Offensive Player of the Year" after passing for 1,147 yards and 12 touchdowns, and rushing for 249 yards and six scores.
Avenger season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com. The 2003 season kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 2, at STAPLES Center versus the New Jersey Gladiators.
