John Elway, Crush Ready for Season
Published on November 5, 2002 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
Colorado Crush President and Chief Executive Officer JOHN ELWAY recently took time away from his busy schedule to answer some questions about his first few months as a front-office executive:
Following is a Q & A with Mr. Elway:
Q: You've been team president of a pro football club officially for four months now; is it what you expected?
JE: I really didn't know what to expect but it has been a lot of fun. There are always a lot more things that have to be done in a startup situation, and we're actually past most of those now. I'm excited about putting our team together.
Q: What has been the most surprising thing about the job?
JE: As a player, you don't realize all the little things that go on behind the scenes of a professional sports team.
Q: What is the buzz in the community about the Crush? Are people excited?
JE: People are really excited. Our season ticket base is growing every day and beating expectations. Colorado is a great football state, and many people don't get a chance to see the Broncos play live and therefore are looking forward to seeing the Crush.
Q: What do you think of the players you acquired in the Expansion and Dispersal Drafts?
JE: We're excited about it and looking forward to getting them on the field and seeing them with our own eyes. We're looking forward to adding to that group with free agents and making our camp as competitive as we can.
Q: What's the next step for the Crush?
JE: Continuing to search the free agent market and putting our staff together on the business side of football.
Q: You are appearing in a number of AFL promotional spots, including one with Kurt Warner. What do you think of them and did you have fun making them?
JE: I thought they turned out great. It was nice of Kurt Warner to participate. I really enjoyed spending time with him and getting to know him. He's a class guy and obviously a guy who hasn't forgotten his roots.
Q: How do you feel with fewer than 100 days before the Crush's first game on February 2 against the Georgia Force in Denver's Pepsi Center?
JE: We're extremely excited about getting the season started. Also, with our partnership with NBC, the game has been underexposed for several years and we believe as people watch the Arena Football League it will grow even more in popularity.
