Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES - Even though it is the off-season, Avenger players, coaches and "A-Team" dancers regularly visit schools, hospitals and community events.
This week, head football coach Ed Hodgkiss spent Tuesday, October 31 taking part in the Toluca Lake Halloween Stuntacular. The stuntacular featured professional Hollywood stuntmen that entertained, thrilled and chilled kids of all ages with a live action show that was free to the public. Hodgkiss took the opportunity to interact with three children and their families that have received wishes through the Wake-A-Wish Foundation.
"The stunt show was really amazing to watch," Coach Hodgkiss said. "I'm really pleased that the Avengers took the opportunity to be apart of a great event for a great cause."
The event was put on to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles to grant the wishes of kids with life threatening illnesses. The Avengers donated tickets to a 2007 game, a tour of STAPLES Center, post-game access to the field along with Avenger t-shirts, hats and wrist bands.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 when a group of caring individuals helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 69 chapters in the U.S. and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants more than 12,500 wishes a year and has granted more than 141,000 wishes in the U.S. since inception.
The Greater Los Angeles chapter has fulfilled over 5,500 wishes since it began in 1983. Volunteers founded the chapter after a story about the Make-A-Wish Foundation's work in Arizona aired on network television. Working out of an office in West Los Angeles, the chapter staff works with over 500 volunteers annually to help fulfill nearly 400 wishes a year.
