Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- Fullback/linebacker Kevin Clemens will not be with the Los Angeles Avengers for Sunday's game against the Orlando Predators after being placed on the Arena Football League's exempt list. He is expected to sign a contract with the National Football League's Philadelphia Eagles.

Clemens (6-0, 275), who will be a fullback with the Eagles, has had two previous shots in the NFL. He participated in the Seattle Seahawks' training camp prior to last season and spent the 2001 preseason with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A four-year AFL veteran, Clemens played in seven games for the Avengers this season, rushing for 38 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. He scored the game-winning touchdown versus the New York Dragons (March 9) on a one-yard dive with no time remaining.

Clemens started his AFL career in 1998, as an offensive/defensive lineman with the San Jose SaberCats and Grand Rapids Rampage. He was traded to the New Jersey Red Dogs in 1999, and was eventually converted into a fullback/linebacker in 2000. Clemens signed with the Avengers on Feb. 7, shortly after the 2003 season opener.

Fortunately for the Avengers, Clemens' departure coincides with the return of fullback/linebacker Mathias Vavao (6-5, 315), who has been activated from the injured reserve list. After scoring five rushing touchdowns in the first five games of the season, Vavao was sidelined for the past three games with a rib injury. He leads the team with 45 rushing yards on 18 carries and also has two receptions for 25 yards.

Sunday's game at the TD Waterhouse Centre pits two of the five teams currently tied for the best record in the AFL. Los Angeles and Orlando are both 6-2. The showdown kicks off at noon (Pacific) and will be televised on Fox Sports Net 2.

The Avengers return home next week to face the Carolina Cobras at STAPLES Center on Friday, April 4. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and that contest will not be televised. For ticket information, please call 1-888-AVENGERS or log on to www.laavengers.com.
