Austin's Marcus Fizer Named NBA D-League MVP
March 31, 2006 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C., March 31 - Austin Toros forward Marcus Fizer has been named the NBA Development League's Most Valuable Player for the 2005-06 season. Fizer was selected by a vote of the league's head coaches and will be honored in a ceremony prior to the Toros game on Sunday against the Fort Worth Flyers.
Fizer, 6-8, 260, is currently leading the D-League in scoring (22.7 pg), is tied for third in rebounding (7.8 pg) and seventh in minutes played (34.6 pg). In 35 games (35 starts), he is also averaging 3.3 assists. The Toros are 21-14 with Fizer in the lineup and 2-8 when he has been out due to injury or call-up.
"I am pleased that Marcus has been selected as the league's Most Valuable Player," Austin coach Dennis Johnson said. "Throughout this season he has excelled far above any expectations and has been a dominant force in our league. I am happy the other coaches agree with me that Marcus is most deserving of this honor."
Fizer earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the Seattle SuperSonics on March 8, and in the five games since returning to the Toros following the completion of that 10-day contract, is averaging 37.0 points and 9.0 rebounds.
"Marcus Fizer began this season on a mission. He worked extremely hard to develop his game, improve his conditioning and enhance his chances of returning to the NBA," D-League Sr. Director of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel Chris Alpert said. "His size, athleticism, skill and knowledge of the game made him the focal point of Austin's offense and earned him a call-up earlier this season.
"Marcus has been a responsible leader and a consummate teammate," Alpert said. "It is only a matter of time before he gets another opportunity to be a valuable contributor on the NBA level."
Named to the All-NBA Development League first team earlier this week (March 27), he notched a season-high scoring night with 44 points against the Albuquerque Thunderbirds on March 21, and a season-best 17 rebounds on February 25 against the Tulsa 66ers. His 10 double-doubles are fourth in the league.
Fizer joins Ansu Sesay (Greenville, 2002) Devin Brown (Fayetteville, 2003), Tierre Brown (Charleston, 2004) and Matt Carroll (Roanoke, 2005) as winners of the D-League Most Valuable Player Award.
