Austin's Malik Hairston Signs With San Antonio Spurs

NEW YORK, Dec. 22, 2008 - The San Antonio Spurs today signed Austin Toros' forward Malik Hairston, making him the second GATORADE Call-Up of the 2008-09 NBA Development League season and the 121st overall since the league began play in 2001.

Hairston has started all 11 of the Toros games this season and is averaging 19.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.3 steals. He twice scored a career-high 33 points, originally on Nov. 29 and again on Dec. 18 and was named NBA D-League Performer of the Week for games played during the week of Dec. 15.

Selected in the second round (48th overall) by the Phoenix Suns in the 2008 NBA Draft, Hairston was traded to San Antonio and played with the Spurs during the 2008 training camp. In six preseason games with the Spurs, he averaged 5.3 points and 4.5 assists before being waived on Oct. 26.

A four year starter at Oregon, Hairston finished his NCAA career averaging 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists, while earning Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 during his sophomore and senior seasons.

Hairston is expected to join fellow NBA D-League alumni Ime Udoka and Ian Mahinmi and the Spurs tonight when the team hosts the Sacramento Kings. He will wear jersey number 1.
