Austin Bruins News Release
This week's games between the Austin Bruins (22-9-10) and the Brookings Blizzard (13-18-7) were polar opposites, aside from the end result. Whereas Wednesday s game in Austin was tightly played, with few penalties and only one goal, Friday s rematch in Brookings was penalty-ridden and high scoring. Austin finished the series sweep with a 6-3 win at the Larson Ice Center.
In a wide-open first period, the Blizzard notched the game s first goal on a power play blast from T.J. Samec (St. Paul, MN) at the point. After drawing a high-sticking penalty moments later, Jake Arroyo (Bolingbrook, IL) blasted a one-timer into the net to tie the game for the Bruins on the man-advantage.
Less than a minute after Arroyo s goal, Cory Dunn (Trenton, MI) head-manned a pass for Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI), who snapped a goal by Blizzard netminder Eric Hancock (North Royalton, OH) on the stick side. Brookings evened the score 2-2 very late in its second power play on a deflection off the body of Garrett Elmore (Brentwood, TN) in front of the net.
Tony Uglem (Moorhead, MN) tapped an easy backhander into an open net with under two minutes to play in the first period to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead at the intermission.
Austin was the superior team in the second period for the second game in a row, tilting the ice for several minutes of the middle frame. On the man-advantage, Wednesday s hero Alex Jasiek (St. Louis, MO) tipped an Arroyo shot past Hancock to double the lead. It was the only goal of the period, as the score held 4-2 after two.
Bruins goalie Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) made three or four highlight-reel saves throughout the night, but Oscar Odd (Karlstad, Sweden) snuck the Blizzard s third goal by him on a one-timer from the left circle midway through the third stanza.
After Brookings Joe Anderson (Side Lake, MN) was robbed point blank by Kielly s glove in the final minutes, Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) and Uglem each added empty-netters to complete the 6-3 tilt. Kielly finished with 25 saves in his 12th win of the season, while Hancock stopped 40 in the loss.
The Bruins have a three-game week coming up, with home games Wednesday against the Minnesota Wilderness and Friday versus the Minnesota Magicians, and a road game Saturday in Richfield against the Magicians. All three games can be seen on fasthockey.com.
