Austin Aces News Release
On July 28th, the Austin Aces played the four-time defending champions, the Washington Kastles, in the Gregory Gym while also honoring all of the breast cancer survivors and raising money for breast cancer awareness. With new addition Elina Svitolina and star Teymuraz Gabashvili crushing the ball in men's sinlges, the Aces won 19-16.
First up was men's doubles. Jarmere Jenkins and Teymuraz Gabashvili of the Aces played Leander Paes and Sam Querrey of the Kastles. While the Aces were down at first, they fought back to bring the set into a tiebreaker. The Kastles won the tiebreaker and were up 5-4 after the first set.
Next was women's doubles, with Elina Svitolina and Alla Kudryavtseva playing for the Aces against Anastasia Rodionova and Madison Brengle for the Kastles. Even though they played well, the long, exhausting rallies did not go the Aces' way. The Kastles won 5-3. The Aces trailed 7-10 after two sets.
Up next was men's singles. Gabashvili of the Aces fought it out against Sam Querrey of the Kastles. With Querrey only winning 7 points the entire set, Gabashvili won men's singles 5-0, which put the Aces ahead 12-10.
The next event was mixed doubles. Kudryavtseva and Gabashvili played for the Aces against the Kastles' Paes and Rodionova. While the crowd was getting into it and Alla hit great winners, the Kastles won the set 5-2. The Aces trailed 14-15 with only women's singles to go.
Lastly was women's singles. World number 20 in women's singles, Svitolina, took on Brengle who is ranked 50 in the world in women's singles. Svitolina made an impact in her first singles set at home, beating Brengle 5-1. The Aces ended up winning the match 19-16.
