Austin Aces Defeat Conference Rival San Diego Aviators 25-8

On July 26, the Austin Aces took on the San Diego Aviators for the Aces' Military Appreciation Night at the Gregory Gym. The Aces never dropped a set and even took two sets 5 games to none. The Aces dropped San Diego by a final score of 25-8.

The first set was mixed doubles. Aces' players Alla Kudryavtseva and Teymuraz Gabashvili took on Darija Jurak and Raven Klaasen of the Aviators. While the Aces went down a break early in the set, Kudryavtseva and Gabashvili came back to win the set 5-3, giving the Aces an early lead.

Up next was women's doubles. Kudryavtseva and Nicole Gibbs of the Aces played the Aviators' Jurak and Chani Scheepers. With amazing serves by Kudryavtseva and strong rallies from Gibbs, the Aces did not allow the Aviators to take a single game in the women's doubles set, winning 5-0. The Aces led 10-3.

Next was men's doubles. Jarmere Jenkins and Gabashvili of the Aces played against Taylor Fritz and Klaasen of the Aviators. Being a little shaky in the first couple games, the Aces staged their comeback. With Gabashvili's powerful serve and Jenkins' volleys, the Aces won the set 5-2. The Aces led 15-5 after three sets.

Women's singles was the next set. Gibbs of the Aces played Scheepers with the Aviators. The set was entirely made up of long rallies ending with Gibbs hitting a winner or Scheepers making an unforced error. Gibbs soared through women's singles 5-0. San Diego trailed 5-20 with only men's singles left.

Lastly was men's singles. Jenkins fought it out against the up and coming Aviator, Taylor Fritz. While this was Jenkins' first time playing men's singles for the Aces, he certainly held up against the runner up of the Roland Garros juniors tournament, winning 5-3 after breaking Fritz in the last game. This cemented the Aces win over the Aviators 25-8.
