Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (37-28) @ GATEWAY GRIZZLIES (28-37)
Tuesday, August 2 - 7:05 p.m. CT
GCS Ballpark - Sauget, IL
Game #66 - Road Game #34 (37-28, 18-15)
RHP #27 ANDREW MOSS (3-3, 3.67 ERA) vs. RHP #26 BLAKE BARBER (4-2, 5.21 ERA)
Last Time Out.
David Fox singled in two runs to cap off a four run seventh inning as the Joliet Slammers (37-28) earned their 21st comeback win of the year in a 6-4 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums (34-32) Monday afternoon. Rookie Kevin Crimmel (4-3) went seven innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits, walking no one, and striking out a season high eight. Trailing 4-2 entering the seventh, Trey Manz drew a walk. Then Leeper hit what appeared to be a routine double play ball that Hector Bernal booted and everyone was safe. With the bases loaded and nobody out Netzel came up huge again with a game tying single to left. David Fox, who had been in quite the slump entering the game, broke out of it in a big way with a sharp single up the gut, scoring two runs and putting the Slammers up 6-4. Brian Smith got the Slammers out of a jam in the eighth and Ryan Quigley picked up the save.
For Starters.
Andrew Moss threw the first no-hitter in Slammers' history in his last start on July 27 against the Lake Erie Crushers. He went the distance, giving up one run, walking six and striking out eight. The Cardinals made Moss their 35th round draft pick in 2009. The Lincoln University product has excelled at multiple levels in affiliated baseball. Moss' strikeout to walk ratio has been stellar, including 61 K's to only 23 BB's in 2010 with the low-A Batavia Muckdogs. He has a career 11-5 record with a 3.15 ERA in the minor leagues. He started 2011 with the Quad City River Bandits of the Midwest League before signing with the Slammers.
Moving on up.
The Slammers have matched their season high of 2.5 games up in the East Division. They've held first place by themselves since the end of play on July 8th. Before then they had not held first place by themselves all year. With a win today the Slammers would match their season high of 10 games over .500.
Stealing is legal.
The Slammers stole a season high six bases yesterday against Traverse City. Josh Flores, Bobby Leeper, and Brad Netzel all had two steals. Flores leads the team with 25 stolen bases in 27 attempts this year.
Road Warriors.
The Slammers have won four of their last five series on the road. In addition, they've swept two of those series as they swept Normal right before the All-Star break and Lake Erie July 27-29. Joliet's record of 18-15 on the road is the best in the East Division and tied for third best in the Frontier League.
Clutch hitters.
David Fox (.425 in 40 AB's) and Brad Netzel (.382 in 55 AB's) lead the team in batting average with runners in scoring position. As a team the Slammers are hitting .271 with runners in scoring position.
Aggression.
Joliet's hitters like to swing the bat as evidenced by their league low 216 walks.
Pitching is the key.
The Slammers have the lowest ERA in East Division at 3.66. In addition, they've held opponents to a league low .238 batting average. The bullpen has been especially strong, compiling an ERA of 2.76.
Leading after six.
The Slammers are almost unbeatable with a record of 26-1 when leading after six innings.
The team triple crown.
Erik Lis leads the Slammers in batting average (.321), Home Runs (13) and RBI (55).
Transaction Wire.
The Slammers placed catcher Trey Manz on the 7-Day DL today. They activated catcher Ben Hewett from the 7-Day Dl.
