Aufderheide Deals, Slammers Rally Late in 4-0 Win against NERDS Herd

August 30, 2020 - Frontier League (FL) - Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET, IL - The Joliet Slammers beat the NERDS Herd 4-0 in Sunday afternoon's contest to officially clinch first place in the 2020 City of Champions Cup. The game featured a sensational pitchers' duel between Slammers starter Cam Aufderheide and NERDS Herd starter Blake Marks, but the Slammers scored all four of their runs in the final inning to shock the NERDS Herd and steal the victory.

Aufderheide spun seven scoreless innings on the mound for the Slammers in his brilliant start. The righthander matched his season-high of eight strikeouts while surrendering five hits and a walk. Aufderheide lowered his ERA in the City of Champions Cup to 2.93 with Sunday's gem.

The Slammers bats came alive in the ninth inning to support the outstanding effort of their pitching staff. Third baseman Mitch Glasser and second baseman Korry Howell each mashed RBI singles in the frame. Center fielder Andrew Shaps contributed with a sacrifice fly to score Glasser. Designated hitter Noah Vaughan accounted for the first run of the frame after drawing a leadoff walk and scoring on a NERDS Herd throwing error on catcher Brian Parreira's infield single.

Andrew Cartier earned the win for relieving Aufderheide with a scoreless eighth inning, and Trevor Charpie preserved the shutout by pitching a scoreless ninth.

Marks was dominant for the NERDS Herd, pitching seven shutout innings. He allowed just one hit, walked four and struck out two.

Right fielder Jacob Crum recorded the only hit of the day for the Slammers against Marks, extending his hitting streak to eight games. With two outs in the seventh inning, Crum drove a triple down the right field line to break up Marks' no-hitter.

Second baseman Matt McGarry had the only extra base hit of the game for the NERDS Herd. He hit a double to left field in the seventh inning.

NERDS Herd right fielder Kevin Watson Jr. and Slammers center fielder Andrew Shaps each made a highlight-reel catch in Sunday's contest. Watson made a diving catch in the sixth inning to rob Slammers shortstop Zach Kirtley of a hit. Shaps made a diving catch, too, to record the third out of the ninth inning and secure the Slammers win.

With Sunday's win, the first-place Slammers improved to 18-5 in the City of Champions Cup. Meanwhile, the fourth-place NERDS Herd dropped to 7-16 with the loss. The Slammers and the NERDS Herd will match up against each other again on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. in Joliet.
