Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors hosted Owen Sound in game three of the Rogers OHL Championship Series this evening. The Majors went into the game undefeated on home ice and looking to take a commanding three games to none series lead. It was not to be though as Owen Sound handed the Majors a 6-5 loss. The series is now 2-1 in favour of Mississauga.

The first period went back and forth as both teams had scoring chances, and both teams capitalized. Owen Sound drew first blood with a goal at 5:17, off the stick of Andrew Shaw. Shaw's ninth of the post season was assisted by Jay Gilbert. The Majors answered back though, and as was the case last night, they did so with the man advantage. After a Mike Halmo roughing penalty at 8:04, Rob Flick tied it up for Mississauga. At 9:17 he found the back of the net, with Maxim Kitsyn assisting, to tie the game at one. A couple of minutes later, this time with Garrett Wilson in the penalty box, the Majors powerplay struck again. Kitsyn scored his eighth goal of the playoffs with Brett Flemming and Jordan Mayer getting the assists, to give the Majors a 2-1 lead. The lead didn't last long as Robby Mignardi scored a shorthanded goal a minute later to tie things up, with Jesse Blacker taking the assist. Less then a minute after that, the Majors scored their third powerplay goal of the period to take a 3-2 lead with a Devante Smith-Pelly goal at 14:24. Stuart Percy and Justin Shugg had the assists. The wild first period ended with one more goal as Owen Sound tied the game with just over a minute remaining. At 18:56, with Jamie Wise serving a penalty for boarding, the Attack scored a powerplay goal when Wilson found the back of the net for the 10th time this post season. The first period ended in a 3-3 tie, with the Majors outshooting the Attack 11-8.

The second period settled down a bit with only two goals being scored, both for the Attack. Owen Sound took the lead at 11:20 when Shaw scored his second goal of the game to make it 4-3. Gilbert and Roman Berdnikov had the assists. With Chris DeSousa in the box serving a slashing penalty, Owen Sound struck again. Halmo got the goal, his fourth of the playoffs, giving the Attack a 5-3 lead. Matt Petgrave and Berdnikov recorded the assists. That was all in the second as the Attack went to the locker room with a 5-3 lead after outshooting the Majors 11-9 in the second period.

In the third, the Majors appeared ready to stage a comeback. Looking to defend their undefeated record on home ice in the playoffs, Mississauga pulled within one of Owen Sound just under two minutes into the period. The goal came from an unlikely source at 1:37, when Brett Flemming scored his first goal of the post season, with Mika Partanen getting the assist. As the period wore on, the Majors continued to threaten but could not solve Michael Zador, who was making his first start of the Rogers OHL Championship Series. Zador could not hold the Majors at bay though. At 14:38, Devante Smith-Pelly tied the game with a goal that just barely crossed the goal line before the net came loose. Casey Cizikas and Shugg had the assists on the game tying goal. The Majors were all over Owen Sound in the third period, outshooting them 17-7, and sending the game to overtime.

The overtime period did not take long as the game was decided just 56 seconds in. Matt Petgrave came into the Majors zone and beat JP Anderson to give the Attack the victory, their first of the Rogers OHL Championship Series. The goal was Petgrave's fourth of the playoffs and came on the first shot of overtime.

JP Anderson suffered his second defeat of the post season in tonight's game, making 21 saves on 27 shots. Michael Zador made 32 saves for his first victory of the Rogers OHL Championship Series. The games three stars were Berdnikov (3rd), Smith-Pelly (2nd) and Shaw (1st).
