After more than a week without action, Atlético Ottawa took to the field on Thursday evening as they faced HFX Wanderers in Halifax. With both teams looking to cement their ways into playoff contention halfway through the 2022 campaign, it took over three-quarters of the match before one side broke the stalemate, Atlético Ottawa taking over the match to secure a scrappy 2-0 victory against a worthy HFX opponent.
KEY MOMENTS
In a slow-build match played through a very compact midfield, it was fitting that Atlético Ottawa's shining midfielder Ollie Bassett ended being the story of the night.
His unrelenting play, from box to box, kept his side in the match despite nervous moments. He managed 55 touches and 40 passes, winning possession back 10 times.
Bassett also added a goal to his tally off a perfectly curled corner kicked that went through HFX'S Oxner's legs. This was Ollie's third goal of the season.
Ottawa's GK Nathan Ingham pulled off another clean sheet (5), thanks in part to a highlight-reel-worthy save in the 81st minute, allowing his side to maintain their 1-goal advantage going into the final minutes of play.
Right-back Miguel Acosta, as solid as ever, added an assurance marker in the 87th minute, showing his quickness and soft touch, capturing his first goal of the season, his third in Atlético Ottawa colours.
Acosta also carved himself a spot as the current league leader in tackles with 23.
Defender Niba MacDonald returned to the field in the final minutes of the match after missing over a month of action due to injury.
With their 6th win of the year, Atlético Ottawa equalize their number of wins from last season (2021: 6W-8D-14L), with 16 matches left to play.
Atléti have set their sights on an unofficial objective of reaching at least 15 wins in 2022, calculating it would place them in solid title contention.
Atlético Ottawa now sits in second place in CPL standings, only 2 points behind league-leading Cavalry FC, who will be the next visiting team at TD Place on July 9th.
Ottawa face a quick turnaround, having to travel to Hamilton to face Forge FC this Sunday (KO 4PM live on OneSoccer).
IN OTHER NEWS
Atlético Ottawa confirmed on Thursday it had picked up Spaniard Iván Pérez following a short-term loan from UD San Sebastian de los Reyes, offering the dynamic left-back a contract extension valid until the end of the 2022 season, with an option for 2023.
