Atlético Ottawa, and their 5,390 fans in attendance at TD Place Saturday afternoon, opened the 2022 Canadian Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Cavalry FC on a significant afternoon, for more than one reason. Beyond the very important positive start to a new season for the Ottawa side, the community rallied in a show of support for Ukraine and dressed the stadium in yellow and blue, from the kits on the pitch to the flag Ukraine Ambassador to Canada, Ms Yulia Kovaliv, draped over her shoulders for the ceremonial coin toss.

KEY MOMENTS

A refreshed group altogether, with only 6 players returning from last season, and a brand new coaching staff, Atlético Ottawa showed a very different personality on the field, from their active start to the solid defensive resilience that stopped Cavalry FC in their tracks.

Head Coach Carlos Gonzalez made great use of the options his roster offered him, leveraging the depth of his squad without hesitation and using players' skillsets in specific situations that would lift the team's performance up. Something to keep an eye on as the season unfolds.

Forward Brian Wright was Atlético Ottawa's lone goal scorer on the day; Wright had also been one of the home opening match goal scorers last season.

While this marked the first match with Atlético Ottawa for many players, it was more importantly the first professional start for Longueuil-native Zakaria Bahous.
