The Canadian Premier League returned with the first game of the season taking place at TD Place in front of a packed house as Atlético Ottawa and Halifax Wanderers played out a tense draw in the spring sunshine. As has become tradition, Atlético's Pay What You Can Home Opener raised funds for the CHEO Foundation whilst championing local hero Lily Millett.
KEY MOMENTS
Atlético Ottawa took to the field in that nation's capital in front of over 7,000 fans as Ollie Bassett's goal on the stroke of half-time cancelled out Zachary Fernandez's first-half strike.
Bassett, Canadian Premier League 2022 MVP, had an opportunity to win the game in the 86th minute for Ottawa but his left-footed effort rolled agonizingly wide of the post.
Bassett was named the Performer of the Match and led the game in shots and expected goals (xG).
Atlético Ottawa remains undefeated in their Home Openers, with two wins and a draw.
7,039 people were in attendance to soak in another electric atmosphere at TD Plalce.
Embarking on a new campaign, Head Coach Carlos González featured a side with plenty of new faces and was cognisant of the fact that it will take time for his side to develop new relationships on the field.
Six (6) of the players to feature in the starting XI were signed during the off-season.
Jean Aniel Assi, starting his first competitive match for the club, provided the Assist for Bassett's equalizer.
Halifax Wanderers only had two (2) players remain in their starting line-up following 15 roster changes during the off-season including new hard coach Patrice Gheisar.
Ottawa starts a two-match road trip, with midweek action in the Canadian Championship before a trip to Winnipeg to face Valour FC.
Atlético faces Halifax Wanderers again on Wednesday in the preliminary round of the Canadian Championship at York Lions Stadium.
OTHER NEWS
Atlético Ottawa confirmed on Friday that the club has signed Junior Agyekum on a U-SPORTS Development Contract following a successful trial period that included a full pre-season in Madrid with the squad.
