CAMDEN, NJ- The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball is growing. Fans are showing up in record numbers, and this season should set a record for total attendance.
In 2005, the league set its high-water mark at 2,032,626 total visitors. On the morning of September 10, it sits at 2,013,677-just 18,950 from besting its own record. Attendance is already over 36,000 visitors improved from last season.
The league will have plenty of time to improve on the year's lofty numbers with 48 games to play. Even if the 4,084 visitors per game average were to dip, the league needs to average just 395 visitors per game to set the new mark.
"The quality of play in the Atlantic League has gotten better every year, and our fans have been doing the same," Joe Klein, executive director of the Atlantic League, said. "As a league, we are quite proud of our attendance."
The Riversharks average 3,535 visitors per game and have totaled 205,004 visitors through 58 of 70 scheduled home games. The team set its season record in 2002 with 313,792 visitors.
"It's been an exciting year for the Riversharks staff," Riversharks general manager, Adam Lorber, said. "We've shown that we are South Jersey's Home Team. Even in times of a soft economy, we're still cheaper than a seeing a movie. We still have a five-dollar ticket."
The season concludes on Sunday, Sept. 21, with a home game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The Riversharks begin postseason play Tuesday, Sept. 24, on the road.
