Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Ending the First Half as they began it, the Jackson Generals put pressure on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp's defense, and the visitors' aggression paid off. The Generals (39-30) took a second inning lead with the help of two miscues in the field by the Shrimp (28-40), and the Generals never looked back, cruising to a 7-0 victory, their 39th victory before the Southern League's All-Star Break. With the win, Jackson finished the season series 8-2 against Jacksonville, winning only their second series in the past two months.
Right-hander Ryan Atkinson (3-6, 3.76 ERA) started the First Half finale and racked his fourth quality start of 2018, as well as his second in a row. The Cincinnati kid's six innings of shut-out pitching featured seven strikeouts, giving him 14 punchouts over his last 12.0 innings of work. Kirby Bellow maneuvered through the seventh without damage, and Daniel Gibson and Kevin Ginkel shut things down in the eighth and ninth, respectively, maintaining their spotless 0.00 ERAs.
Tyler Ladendorf and Jason Morozowski played central roles to Jackson's offensive production on Sunday. Ladendorf reached base on an error to begin the third inning, and Morozowski grounded into a fielder's choice two batters later that led to a Jacksonville throwing error, giving Ladendorf time to score the game's first run. A well-executed bunt by Atkinson two batters later would help the cause, drawing Morozowski in for a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, a Kevin Medrano RBI triple would score Daniel Robertson, and then Ladendorf singled home Medrano, with Morozowski singling home Ladendorf two batters after that for a 5-0 advantage. A double steal executed by Galli Cribbs and Morozowski during Jose Queliz's at-bat created another Jacksonville error, and both runners came in to score on the play, making it a five-run inning for the Generals. Medrano ended up falling one hit shy of matching teammate Jamie Westbrook for the Southern League lead in hits (76 entering the day), finishing with three rips that included Medrano's league-best 23rd and 24th doubles of the year.
