Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN "" The Greeneville Astros (23-10) just seem to find a way to win close games and on Thursday night at Pioneer Park, they pushed their current win streak to thirteen games with a 3-2 defeat of the Johnson City Cardinals (14-18). It was the third time in the last five games that the Astros have defeated the Cardinals by a single run, and they are now 10-1 in one-run games this season.
The game began with the Cardinals striking first. Richy Pedroza led off in the top of the first inning by drawing a walk and, after advancing around to third with two outs, scored on a wild pitch to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. However, the Astros bounced right back in the bottom of the inning.
Tanner Mathis led off for the Astros with a ground ball single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Phillips. Then, Chase McDonald connected on a base hit to center field to bring Mathis home for a score to even the game at 1-1. Two innings later, Juan Santana got on base with an error, moved to third on a Tanner Mathis single and finally scored on a Brett Phillips line drive to left field. That run put the Astros on top 2-1, which remained the score through the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, the Cardinals had runners at first and second with one out. Then, the Astros got the Cardinals to hit into a potential double play before misfiring on the throw to first base and allowed the lead runner to score all the way from second base.
After a scoreless seventh inning with the game tied at 2-2, the Astros held the Cardinals in check during the top of the eighth inning. Then, Brett Phillips led off the bottom of the inning for the Astros and was hit by a pitch to get on base. A missed pickoff attempt that sailed over the first baseman's head allowed Phillips to advance all the way around to third. Finally, Chase McDonald hit a sacrifice fly deep to center field to bring in the tie-breaking run and give the Astros a 3-2 advantage, which proved to be the final score.
Astros' reliever Raul Rivera picked up the win as he pitched the final three innings in relief and gave up just two hits with two strikeouts. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Frederick Tiburcio gave the Astros six innings and allowed two runs, with just one earned, on two hits with four strikeouts.
The Astros will begin a new three-game home series against the Pulaski Mariners on Friday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm with a Friday Night Fireworks show immediately following the conclusion of the game. For more information on the Greeneville Astros, please visit www.greenevilleastros.com
