(ROUND ROCK, TX) - Outfielder Brian Gordon and right-handed pitcher Brandon Puffer, both Round Rock residents, signed minor league contracts this off-season with the Houston Astros. Both players will play in Round Rock if they do not make the Houston Astros 25 man roster out of Spring Training.

Gordon graduated from Round Rock High School in 1997 and signed a professional contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks after being drafted in the 7th round. Gordon then signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Angels on November 5, 2003. He has played the past two seasons in the Pacific Coast League for Salt Lake.

Gordon is a lifetime .277 hitter in 3,483 at bats covering nine minor league seasons (940 games). He has 198 doubles, 60 triples, 102 home runs and 522 RBI. Last season, Gordon batted .274 with 17 home runs and 55 RBI in 101 games for the Salt Lake Stingers.

Gordon's mother, Wendy, has worked in the front office for the Round Rock Express since 1999.

Reliever Brandon Puffer will make his return to The Dell Diamond after playing for the Express in 2001. Puffer went 6-1 with a 2.07 ERA in 56 games for the Double-A Express. Puffer's 2.07 ERA and 56 games both rank fourth on the single-season records chart.

Puffer, who originally signed as a 27th round draft choice of the Minnesota Twins in 1994, will enter his eleventh professional baseball season. He has played in the Twins, Angles, Reds, Rockies, Astros, Padres and Giants organizations. He also spent part of the 2000 season with the independent Somerset Patriots.

Puffer has a career Major League record of 3-4 with a 4.75 ERA in 82 games for the Astros and Padres. In 418 career Minor League appearances, Puffer has posted a 36-33 record with a 3.52 ERA and 80 saves. He has struck out 523 batters while walking 244 in 611.2 innings pitched.

Puffer pitched last season for the Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League where he went 6-5 with a 5.52 ERA in 54 games.

The Round Rock Express will open the 2006 season in New Orleans on April 6. The 2006 Dell Diamond home opener is scheduled for April 14 against the Iowa Cubs.
