August 3, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Lester in Michigan. (and comments): Mr. Newman. The ABA is amazing. You keep announcing expansion teams for 2006 and already for 2007. How do you do it and other leagues can't even get one new team?"
Answer: Lester. You made my day. If you're close to Benton Harbor or Detroit, let me know and I'll put some tickets at Will Call. What a good question and a fun one to answer. How does the ABA add so many teams and other leagues can't find one (except to recruit ABA teams)? The answer is easy. We believe we have the best business model in professional sports. It is easier to own and operate an ABA team than any other professional sports team. We have the lowest "entry fee," we do not charge large monthly dues and assessments to team owners (our owners keep 100% of their ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise sales, etc and are not taxed by the league), and mostly, we provide more direction in the form of business plans, operating plans, community plans, public relations and media plans, staffing, etc than the next six leagues combined. If followed, you can be successful. And we have another thing that differs from other leagues. We do not solicit their teams; we believe in SPORTSMANSHIP on and off the court. And the message is one that prospective team owners can understand and appreciate. Lester. Thank you. If you're interested in a team or have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
