Question from Milton G., Boston, MA: "Is the ABA contemplating any new rules for next season? You seem to be on the cutting edge of everything."

Answer: Milton. Thanks for the question and the kind words. The question is timely. We will have a league meeting in June and one of the topics on the Agenda is League Rules. Our goal is to make the game more interesting and more exciting for the fans and yet not change for the sake of change. We think the 3-D rule is tremendous because it rewards defense and creates fast breaks and higher scoring. We like the 3-10-and Out Overtime Rule. It was incredible at the recent ABA playoff semi-finals between Indiana and Strong Island. Several of our team owners and fans have sent in ideas, some of which are appealing, some of which are "off the wall." But we are open to anything that will make the game experience more fun and more interesting for both the fans and the players. Example. We are looking at the Super Foul. After 8 fouls in a quarter, a team can elect to shoot the two shots or take a single shot from the 3-point line (and allow the best shooter to take it). That way, teams won't deliberately foul poor shooters to gain possession and to slow up the game. This is on the table. If you or others have any ideas, we would welcome them. Email joenewman@abalive.com or if you have a question, same thing. Again thanks.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
