Asheville Makes Major Trade
January 5, 2005 - SPHL (SPHL)
Asheville Aces News Release
The Asheville Aces made a major trade today with the Jacksonville Barracudas. Leaving Asheville is team Captain Peter Cermak who in 25 games with the Aces had 9 goals and 10 assists. In return for Cermak, the Aces receive stallwart defenceman Liam McCarthy. McCarthy is expected to bring a physical edge and solid defensive game to the Aces. In 18 games with the Cudas, he was a very impressive +7 and had two assists.
The Cermak deal was not the only trade that took place today for the Aces. Latvian defenceman Andris Vegners was dealt to the Winston-Salem Polar Twins for 6'4", 200 lb. defenceman Chris Kovalcik. Kovalcik, a native of Armada, Michigan played in 18 games for the Polar Twins and had 1 goal and 3 assists. He also accumlated 56 PIMs. Vegners leaves the Aces having managed 1 goal and 3 assists and a -5 rating.
With these two roster moves, Brubaker has shored up his defensive ranks significantly. The Aces were showing signs of a weakening defensive core, allowing 48 and 62 shots against in the last two games respectively. Altough the decision to trade his Captain and a talented young prospect was difficult, Brubaker is hopeful that these mid-season roster changes will get the team back on the winning track.
"Trading Peter and Andris was a tough thing to do, because they are both quality young men. But we needed to get bigger and stronger, and you have to give up good players to get good ones," Brubaker said.
The Aces meet the Columbus Cottonmouths this Thursday at the Asheville Civic Center. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. This Thursday also marks the first of four "Dollar Beer Nights" at the Civic Center sponsored by Wild Wing Cafe and Miller Brewing Company. The Aces remind fans to please drink responsibly and make sure you have a designated driver or take a taxi home.
