Duluth-Superior Dukes News Release
(Duluth, MN) Duluth-Superior Dukes field manager, Al Gallagher, continues to search the globe for the perfect ballplayers. Today, he announced two more players. Gallagher signed Japanese second baseman Tomoyuki Takayama and right-handed pitcher Tom Masterman of St. Paul.
At 31, Masterman is one of the oldest rookies in Northern League history. He pitched at Cleveland State University in 1993 and 1994, striking out 38 in 36 innings. The Winnipeg Goldeyes then signed Masterman to a contract for the 1995 season after he was clocked throwing 90 mph in tryouts. For the Fish, he appeared in 19 games (1-1) earning 2 saves, while striking out 8 in 24 innings.
Masterman, who is still classified as a rookie, according to Northern League rules, retired from baseball following the 1995 season. After six years of working in the Twin Cities as a service manager, he's accepted the calling of the baseball diamond. The rookie, again, made a strong showing in the Northern League tryout camp in Florida earlier this month by throwing 90+ mph.
"Hopefully, Tom has aged like a fine wine," said Gallagher. "Being from California, I know my wine, and I like to think that I know a good pitcher when I see him. Tom showed heart and determination in Florida. He is great story."
Tomoyuki Takayama, a 23 year-old second baseman from Japan is a proven winner. He was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers of the AAA Japanese minor league in the 8th round of the 2000 draft. The right-handed hitter stole 7 bases while driving in 19 RBI last season on the championship team.
Gallagher has had his eye on Takayama. "I saw him play a few years ago in a tryout camp in Los Angeles. I was impressed with him at the camp and with his experience in Japan since then, I have no doubt he will make an impact on our roster and the league."
Both players will report to training camp, along with the rest of the roster, on May 10th.
