Jacksonville Armada FC News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 20, 2015) - It's official. The Jacksonville Armada FC will travel to Richmond, Va., to take on the United Soccer League's Richmond Kickers in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at 7 p.m. EST on Wednesday, May 27.

The Kickers defeated National Premier Soccer League side Virginia Beach City FC, 2-0, in a second-round match Wednesday evening in Richmond. Virginia Beach City FC held off the Kickers' attack for 47 minutes before conceding a header off a corner kick from Richmond's Nate Shiffman. The Kickers closed off the match with their second goal in the 89th minute from Jason Yeisley off yet another header.

The Armada FC's first-ever U.S. Open Cup opponent will be a team that won the competition in 1995. Richmond's 2015 U.S. Open Cup campaign is the 17th time the team has qualified for the tournament over the past 22 seasons and has recorded an overall record of 26-15.

The club has made it to the quarterfinal round five times (1995, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2011) and the semifinal round twice (1995, 2011) in addition to knocking out multiple Major League Soccer teams including the Colorado Rapids, LA Galaxy, Columbus Crew and Sporting Kansas City. In 2011, the Kickers became the first lower division team to defeat back-to-back MLS teams on the road.

May 27 will mark the inaugural U.S. Open Cup match for the Armada FC. The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest single-elimination cup competition in domestic soccer, dating back to 1914. The Armada FC will join nine fellow North American Soccer League clubs and the 21 winners of second round matches.

U.S. Soccer will announce the fourth-round draw for the winner of the Armada FC/Kickers match on a live webcast at 7 p.m. EST this Thursday on http://120sports.com/ 120Sports.com.

In its 102nd edition, this year's U.S. Open Cup includes 91 teams, the largest field to compete in the modern era (1995-present). This year also marks the fourth consecutive competition in which all U.S.-based Division I, II and III professional teams will participate.
