SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (August 9, 2015) - Two goals in less than two minutes were all Arizona United SC needed to beat LA Galaxy II, 2-1, at the StubHub Center. The win snaps United's five-match winless streak and is the club's second win over Los Dos this season.
Arizona forward Long Tan broke the scoreless draw in the 31st minute. After an LA player accidentally flicked a long goal kick back toward his net, and the ball bounced past another defender, United defender Damian Rosales slipped behind the defensive line and centered a pass to an oncoming Tan. The team's leading scorer (11 goals) slammed the shot into the back of the net.
A minute later, Arizona (8-12-1) added to its lead.
Soon after Los Dos (11-8-3) kicked off, United forced a turnover and began a counter attack. On the left flank, Tan ran into space before needling a ball through the middle of the defense and to the feet of an onrushing Chin. After a heavy touch, Chin poked the ball past the diving goalkeeper and gave Arizona a 2-0 lead.
That lead held despite improved attacking play from LA in the second half and a penalty called against United.
Los Dos cut the Arizona lead in half in the 65th minute. LA midfielder Andres Auras picked up the ball in midfield, then weaved his way through the defense before firing a shot past United goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski.
Then, in the 72nd minute, Los Dos were given a penalty kick. Jaime Villarreal appeared to have Woszczynski beaten, but his shot slapped the crossbar and LA couldn't get to the rebound. Los Dos didn't challenge Woszczynski the rest of the match.
With the win, United also snapped an eight-match road losing streak. The club's last win on the road had been on April 11, against the Austin Aztex. United also moves up one spot in the standings, from 11th place to 10th place, with 25 points. LA had a chance to take over the top spot in the Western Conference with a win, but they remain at 33 points, good for 4th place.
Arizona's next matchup is on Saturday, August 15, against Orange County Blues FC. That match will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets at ArizonaUnited.com.
