Phoenix Rising FC News Release

PEORIA, AZ - Led by a game-winning goal from forward Tyler Blackwood, Arizona United Soccer Club extended its winning streak to three matches in a 1-0 victory over San Antonio FC. With the win, Arizona United SC moves into the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference Standings.

"You want to come off a win away from home, and play well at home," said Arizona United SC head coach Frank Yallop. "I think performance wise it wasn't great but, a great gutty performance to win the game."

Prior to his game winner, Blackwood had arguably the best chance of the evening. But his shot was wide left of the target.

"I think I wouldn't be allowed back in the locker room if I didn't score to make up for it," Backwood said. "You can't let it get to you too much because when the next one comes, you're still thinking about the last one. Spend a couple seconds on it and then don't worry about it you can't get it back. You just have to move on to the next one."

Blackwood broke the scoreless match in the 73rd minute. Teammate Long Tan had the ball in the open field, outside of the box. He flicked a pass up and over the defenders to an on-rushing Blackwood, who got to the ball, then slide it under the goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.

"I think we're coming in at the right time, things are finally clicking," said goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski. "We've had confidence this whole year, we have great players at every position, depth at every position, so its finally coming together. You know, its been great"

The match was scoreless in the first half, but Arizona had its chances. In the 26th minute, forward Chris Cortez got his head on a ball inside the six-yard box, but San Antonio goalkeeper Josh Ford grabbed the shot easily. Then in the 45th minute, Tony Cascio got the ball at his feet at the top-left corner of the six-yard box, turned and fired at the keeper. But Ford made the kick save to keep the match 0-0.

"Like I said last week, you always look at the table wondering 'If we win tonight, where will we go?' " said Blackwood. "Now there's going to be other teams in our league looking to match our results. Other teams will think, 'They're coming for us.' The next game they might make a mistake making sure that we don't catch them. We got to keep applying pressure and I have no doubt that we will be in the playoffs this year."

Arizona United improves to 8-8-6 with 30 points. San Antonio falls to 6-8-7 and has 25 points. Both clubs will meet again on Wednesday, August 17, at San Antonio. Arizona United SC will host a watch party at the Rose and Crown Pub in downtown Phoenix.
