Peoria, AZ - Arizona United Soccer Club finished its 2016 home season at Peoria Sports Complex with an exhilarating 3-2 win over Real Monarchs SLC in front of 1,239 fans. The club finishes the year 5-8-4 at home and improves to 9-13-7 on the year with 34 points. Real Monarchs SLC fall to 10-13-6 with 36 points.
"You know I said to the guys before the game, 'Just go out and enjoy it,' " said head coach Frank Yallop. "There was nothing on the game really except pride and we want to win at home in front of the fans and for ourselves. I think they took that into the game."
The night's most exciting moment came on Arizona United SC's game-tying goal. Goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski kicked the ball from the defensive side of the field into the offensive half. Forward Chris Cortez kicked the long ball up into the air and then defender Peter Kelly smashed it into the net to tie the match 2-2.
The ball traveled about 80 yards from the first pass to the back of the net without hitting the ground.
"It was a wonder goal," Yallop said. "I mean their first goal was incredible but I think that goal from Peter might have been even better. Two great goals to witness if you were in the stands. If not, you should check out YouTube later."
Added Kelly: "It was one of those things that you're reacting and you're not really thinking. I'll be watching it on loop because that was my first goal of my two, three years so I was excited about it."
United's game winner came in the 75th minute when forward Long Tan deflected a shot from forward Luke Rooney past a helpless goalkeeper to make it 3-2.
Arizona took the lead in the 13th minute thanks to Rooney. With plenty of space to run the ball up field, Rooney smashed a hard-rolling shot from just outside of the top of the net, into the lower left corner to make it 1-0.
The Monarchs then tied the match going into the half with a highlight-reel goal of their own. Pedro Baez ripped a shot from 30-plus yards away and curled it into the top left corner of the net to equalize in the first-half stoppage time.
Then the Monarchs took a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute after Amet Ramirez spun his defender around and the poked a shot past a diving Woszczynski.
"What I like about the spirit of our team (is the ability) to come back and get the win," Yallop said. "Which we haven't seen a lot of this year. One more game to go hopefully we get something out of that one but I am actually looking forward to next year. I want to keep some of the guys that I think have done well this year, just build and go again."
Arizona United SC will play its final match of 2016 at Portland against Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday, September 24. Kickoff is at 7:30 P.M. The team will be hosting an official watch party at Dubina Brewing Company (17035 N 67th Ave # 6, Glendale, Arizona). Fans are encouraged to get there by 7:00 P.M.
